Middle: your primary damage — usually the flagship or your best Artillery hull. Close enough to contribute fully, far enough back to survive the opening exchange.

Back: control, support and sustain. Strategic hulls, healers, debuff carriers. These have the lowest durability and the highest per-second value, so protect them.

Separating fleets deserves its own mention because it is the biggest efficiency gain available to a mid-game player.
