Heroes are designed for a slot. Chizuru is an excellent artillery First Mate and a poor Captain; Ophelia is the reverse. Putting a First Mate in the Captain's chair wastes their kit and leaves the ship without a proper damage identity.

How the Slots Interact

The captain sets the ship's combat identity. Their main skill fires in battle, their stats scale the hull, and the ship's behaviour follows their kit. When someone describes a ship build, they are describing the captain.

The flagship deserves your best hero, full stop. It carries the highest stat weight, it is the ship you will upgrade most, and it appears in nearly every fight.

It also has five slots, and the last two are role-locked: Master-at-Arms takes defense heroes only (Yuji, Obi, Akhlut the Anchor Lord), and Surgeon takes support heroes only (Umar is the free-to-play pick). Choosing a First Mate

Two damage dealers on one ship. The classic trap. Feels powerful, produces less than a damage captain with a survivability mate, because dead ships deal no damage.

A support hero as captain of a damage hull. The hull's damage profile goes unused, and the support kit does not scale the way a captain skill should.

Duplicated debuffs. Two heroes applying the same reduction rarely stack usefully. Check the actual effect text, not the icon.

Your best hero on a hull you never field. Sounds obvious; happens constantly. Heroes should follow your actual fleet usage, not your theoretical build.

Building the Fleet, Not the Ship

Individual pairings matter less than the fleet as a whole. Across your active fleet you want:

Reassigning a hero is usually cheap or free, so experiment. What is not cheap is promotion — that investment is effectively permanent, so decide who you are promoting before you decide who sails where.

A practical routine: keep your promoted core fixed on your main fleet, and rotate uninvested heroes through secondary ships to see what the pairing feels like. You lose nothing, and you learn which effects actually stack before committing shards.
